A Good Cup of Tea is One of Britain’s National Treasures
Dot’s Thot:
“Another novelty is the tea-party, an extraordinary meal in that, being offered to persons that have already dined well, it supposes neither appetite nor thirst, and has no object but distraction, no basis but delicate enjoyment.” — Anthelme Brillot-Savarin, French Lawyer, Politician, and Writer (1755-1826)_
A national survey was taken in Britain to ascertain the 50 top national treasures of the nation. Interestingly, a nice cup of tea beat all current celebrities and all sporting events and was ranked as no. 6 in the national treasure list. Not bad for a quiet and comforting ritual in these days of hectic multi-processing and constant attention assaults.
Here are the top 10 in the survey:
1. William Shakespeare
2. Buckingham Palace
3. Fish and Chips
4. Big Ben
5. Old-fashioned red phone boxes
6. Cup of Tea
7. Beatles
8. Red Buses
9. The Queen
10. Stonehenge
You can also see the rest of the top 50 British National Treasures in the article cited below. Brew up a pot or a cup and enjoy some treats along with the tea. My husband, being from India, is partial to cucumber sandwiches. Aloha, Dot

Dot’s Thot: “The sum of intelligence on the planet is a constant; the population is growing.” — unknown author
For those of us who are interested, a news release from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that New Orleans was the fastest growing city in the U.S. in 2008 (where the population year goes from July to July). This table from their site shows the currently rated top 10 U.S. cities by Population Estimates. Real estate investors might be surprised to find that Phoenix is more populous than Philadelphia.

Obama Slept Here — Caesers Palace Fit for Mr. President
Dot’s Thot:
“I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself.” — Maya Angelou
I happened to be in Las Vegas just after a visit by President Barack Obama (here for a fundraiser for Nevada Sen. Harry Reid) and saw an article by Doug Elfman in the Las Vegas Review-Journal about the digs used by President Obama while staying here. It was the penthouse suite at Caesars Palace, where if you are a gambler, you have to be a million-dollar high roller; a hundred grand does not get you in.
Some highlights, according to Elfman: the ashtrays held peanut butter cup wrappers, no cigarette butts — Michelle would be pleased, we’re sure. Out of the six possible bedrooms, Elfman guessed that Obama slept in the master suite which overlooks the Strip. While the place comes with butler attached and a dining table suiitable for VIP dining, Obama ordered a steak from Neros. Instead of the in-house treadmill and weights, Mr. President went to the regular gym which was closed for 45 minutes for security reasons.
In an ironic twist, President Obama came up the service lift, much like black entertainers like Sammy Davis Jr. did 50 years ago in Vegas. However, this past week, it was just for security reasons. Times have changed and I was thinking that Barack Obama has had to learn to be at home in himself, so as to be at home anywhere. Click on the Image or go to www.lvrj.com/obama_suite to see a video tour of the penthouse where Obama slept.
Aloha, Dot
P.S. I also saw a related article about how Multiracial Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. President Obama describes himself as a “mutt”. Hawaii ranks #1 percentage-wise as almost 1 in 5 persons is mixed or “hapa-something”. In my own extended family, we count Okinawan, Japanese, Chinese, Anglo-Mixed, Gujrati (Indian), Laotian, Black, Puerto Rican, and a white Australian among our American generations 1 through 5 — and, yes, we started in the mixing bowl of the nation, Hawaii. There is a richness of genes, cultures, and knowledge out there — life and love are good.
